A key means of reducing emissions is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from construction and the use of buildings. This can be done, for example, by renovating the streets in a climate-smart way. In Helsinki, the Hämeentie street section between Toukola and Vanhakaupunki will be renovated in the technically best way, while taking into account the climate impacts.
The climate impact of the basic renovation is influenced by a wide range of measures. The project will utilise the land masses better through more effective coordination in the effort to reuse the soil. The old asphalt is utilised by removing it by milling, allowing the millings to be reused. The removed pavements are also reused, and substrates developed from surplus soil are used instead of acquiring new soil.
Smooth traffic arrangements are also taken care of during the repair, and the construction equipment in use run on alternative propulsion.
The climate-smart solutions reduce emissions by up to 30%, which generates cost savings of up to EUR 1 million.
